You can listen to a track without leaving the list. It plays in the player bar at the foot of the window, and from there you step through the list, give stars and react, as you would on a row. Everyone who can open the list can play its tracks, including people who can only look.

Start a track

  • From a row. The play button sits over the track’s cover, at the start of the row. On a computer it shows when you hold the pointer over the row; on a touch screen it is always there.
  • From the track drawer. Open a track (a tap on its row, or on the track in the timeline) and press the play button over the cover. Press it again to stop.
Nothing from Spotify, YouTube or SoundCloud loads until you press play. Their player then comes with their own cookies, as the privacy statement at setlist.dj/privacy explains.

The player bar

The bar is fixed to the foot of the window and stays there while you scroll. From left to right: On a phone the cover, the title and the buttons come first, with the stars and the player on lines of their own below.

One player for the whole site

One track plays at a time, on the whole site. Start another one, from this list or another, and it takes over the bar. The player keeps playing when you go to another page of the site: Your lists, another list, your account. A full reload of the page or leaving the site stops it.

Previous and next

Previous track and Next track step through the tracks that have a player, in the order the table shows them. Tracks without a player are skipped, and the place (3 of 12) counts only the tracks that can play. While a proposed order is shown with Proposed, the player follows that order (see The proposed order). The set and the Maybe list each have their own order: a track started on the Maybe list steps through the Maybe list. If a track that plays is removed from the list, or moved between the set and the Maybe list, the player stops.

Rate while you listen

Give stars and reactions in the bar as you hear the track; they land on its row straight away. The comment count opens the track’s Discussion in its drawer, or opens the list on that track if you are on another page. If the link only lets you look, the stars are greyed: Only people invited to comment or edit can give stars.

In the table

The row that plays has a faint ground, its title in yellow and a small moving equaliser where its number was, so you can see where you are in the set.

Close it

Press × at the end of the bar, or press Escape. Escape goes to an open menu, dialog or field first: close that, or click outside the field, then press Escape for the player.

What each source plays

A track without a player has no play button. Its cover says No player for this one, and its drawer says No player for this one: it is your own file, or typed in by hand.
Every track with a link has Open on Spotify, Open on YouTube or Open on SoundCloud in its drawer, for the whole track in its own app.
Some browsers do not let a page start sound by itself. Press the play button inside Spotify’s player in the bar.
That is Spotify’s preview. Sign in to Spotify in the same browser and play it again, or press Open on Spotify in the track’s drawer.
It is your own file, a typed track or a page from another site. See What each source plays.
