# Troubleshooting

> The problems you are most likely to meet on setlist.DJ, what causes them and what to do.

When something does not work, setlist.DJ usually says why in a sentence near where it happened: under the add field,
in the badge that counts the tracks in, or on the button you pressed. Look for that sentence first. The answers below
start from what you see.

## Adding tracks

> [accordion] I dragged tracks in, but nothing was added
>
> Look at the line under the add panel. It says what happened:
>
> * *Nothing in that drop we can read.* The drop arrived empty, or it was an image, an album or a podcast. Drag the
> tracks themselves, or copy them and paste them in **Paste links**.
> * *That playlist can't be read: it's private, or gone.* You dragged a playlist that is not public. Make it public
> in Spotify, or open it, select the tracks inside it and drag those, selected together.
> * *One import at a time: this one is still running.* Wait until the badge says how many tracks were added, then
> drop them again.
> * *Those files are not tracks or a rekordbox export.* setlist.DJ reads MP3, AIFF, WAV, M4A and FLAC files, a
> rekordbox collection export, and .txt, .m3u8 or .csv playlists.
> * *All 12 already on the list. Nothing new to add.* Every track you dragged was there already.
>
> If there is no add panel at all, your link lets you comment or look, not edit. Ask the list's owner. On a phone you
> cannot drag tracks in from another app: share the track's link and paste it.

> [accordion] A Spotify playlist adds nothing, or only one track
>
> Look at the line under the add panel:
>
> * *That playlist can't be read: it's private, or gone.* Only public playlists can be read. In Spotify, open the
> playlist's menu and make it public, then paste the link again.
> * *The playlist didn't come through just now.* Try again in a minute.
> * *That's an album link.* An album's link on its own adds nothing yet.
>
> Either way you can copy the tracks themselves:
>
> 1. Open the playlist or album in Spotify on your computer.
> 2. Click any track, then select them all: **⌘ A** on a Mac, **Ctrl A** on Windows.
> 3. Copy: **⌘ C** or **Ctrl C**.
> 4. Paste on the **From Spotify** tab and press **Add**.
>
> One track instead of the whole playlist means you pasted one track's link, or only one was selected when you
> copied. The tracks already on the list are skipped, so nothing comes in twice. A list holds up to 500 tracks, so
> a longer playlist stops there; *It stopped partway* means paste the link again for the rest. See
> [From Spotify](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/add-tracks.md#from-spotify).

> [accordion] A track says Not found, or has a grey badge
>
> Its source told setlist.DJ nothing about it: the link is private, the track is gone, or the source did not answer.
> The track stays on the list with its link and a grey **Not found** badge. Choose **Edit title and artist** in the
> row's menu with three dots, fill in the **Title** and **Artist**, and press **Save**.
>
> A private SoundCloud link does the same: *SoundCloud tells us nothing about it; fill in the title yourself.*
>
> A key in plain text, without a coloured chip, is something else: a key setlist.DJ cannot place on the
> Camelot wheel, shown as it was written. Correct it with **Edit title and artist** if you like.

> [accordion] The rekordbox export has several playlists, or will not import
>
> * **Several playlists.** Drop the file on a list, not on the home page. The list shows *Which playlist?* with every
> playlist in the file and how many tracks each has; press **Add these** on the one you want. On the home page
> setlist.DJ says so and asks you to make a list first.
> * **It says it is not a rekordbox export.** The file is not a whole export. In rekordbox, choose **File**, **Export
> Collection in xml format**, and drop that file. For a single playlist you can also right-click it in rekordbox
> and export it as .txt or .m3u8.
> * **Some tracks are missing.** A track that is in a playlist but missing from the collection part of the file is
> skipped. The picker says how many.
>
> See [Import from rekordbox](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/add-tracks.md#import-from-rekordbox).

## BPM, key and energy

> [accordion] BPM, key or energy is missing
>
> setlist.DJ finds the BPM, key and energy of every track it can identify, usually within a minute of the track
> landing. The page fills them in by itself; you do not need to reload. For a track it cannot place yet, it tries
> again by itself later.
>
> A track it cannot identify, such as an unreleased edit or a dubplate, keeps a dash. Type
> its BPM and key yourself with **Edit title and artist** in the row's menu. Energy cannot be typed.

> [accordion] BPM, key or energy looks wrong
>
> They are estimates, worked out from the track's own audio, and an estimate can be off. Correct the BPM or key with
> **Edit title and artist**. A BPM or key that you typed, or that came from your rekordbox collection, stays as it is:
> setlist.DJ does not overwrite it.

## Playing

> [accordion] A track does not play
>
> * **There is no play button.** The track is your own file from rekordbox, a track typed by hand, or a page from
> another site such as Beatport. Its cover says *No player for this one*. For a track from another site, **Open on
> Beatport** (or that site's name) in the track's drawer opens it there.
> * **A Spotify track does not start.** Some browsers do not let a page start sound by itself. Press play inside
> Spotify's player in the bar at the foot of the window.
> * **It stopped.** A full reload of the page, or leaving the site, stops the player. So does removing the track that
> plays, or moving it between the set and the Maybe list.

> [accordion] A Spotify track plays only a short part
>
> That is Spotify's preview: *A preview from Spotify; the whole track plays there.* Sign in to Spotify in the same
> browser and play it again, or press **Open on Spotify** in the track's drawer. Tracks from YouTube and SoundCloud
> play whole. See [Play tracks](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/play-tracks.md).

## Your list

> [accordion] I lost my list
>
> The link is the list. Look for it where you sent it: the crew chat, your mail, your browser's history. Anyone who
> was on the list can send it to you again.
>
> **Your lists**, in the header, shows every list you made or joined in this browser. If you signed in, sign in again
> with the same address or the same Google account, on any device, and your lists are there.
>
> As a guest you had your lists only in the browser you used. On another device, or after clearing the browser's
> data, setlist.DJ cannot know they are yours: only the link opens them. Signing in prevents that next time; see
> [Account and privacy](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/account-and-privacy.md#sign-in).
>
> A new list that you left without doing anything on it is not kept. If the link says *This link leads nowhere*, the
> list was deleted, or the link is not complete. Ask whoever sent it.

> [accordion] Someone changed my list
>
> Open the menu with three dots and choose **History**: every change on the list, newest first, with who made it.
>
> * **A track was removed.** It waits under **Removed** at the foot of the list, and at the top of **History**.
> Press **Put it back**: it goes back to the end of the set, or of the Maybe list if it was there. Its stars, reactions and
> comments went when it was removed and do not come back.
> * **The order was replaced by an analysed one.** In **History**, the line *… used the analysed order …* has **Put
> the old order back**. Tracks added since go to the end.
> * **Tracks were moved by hand.** The history says where each one was, such as *Carl moved it from 7 to 3*. Drag it
> back.
>
> To stop it happening again, open **Share** and choose **Can comment** or **Can view** for the link. People who
> joined while the link could edit keep that right, so change their role or remove them under **On this list** in
> the same panel. Only the owner can. See [Share and collaborate](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/share-and-collaborate.md).

> [accordion] I deleted something for good
>
> Two things cannot be undone:
>
> * **Permanently delete** on a removed track. The track, its notes and its history are gone. Add it again and it
> comes in as a new track; setlist.DJ finds its BPM, key and energy again.
> * **Delete list**. The tracks, stars and comments go with it, and nothing brings it back. If someone made a copy
> with **Duplicate list** before, that copy still has the tracks.
>
> **Remove from list** is not for good: the track waits under **Removed** until you put it back. Right after removing
> it, **Undo** puts it back where it was.

## Questions

> [accordion] Does it cost anything?
>
> No. Nothing on setlist.DJ asks you to pay, and you do not need an account.

> [accordion] Who can see my list?
>
> Anyone who has its link. There is no private list at the moment: the link is the list, so send it only to the
> people you want on it. What the link lets them do is up to you, in **Share**: **Can edit**, **Can comment** or
> **Can view**. Search engines are told to stay out, so a list does not turn up in a search. See
> [Share and collaborate](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/share-and-collaborate.md).

> [accordion] Do I need an account?
>
> No. You start as a guest, and you can make lists, add tracks, rate and comment. Sign in when you want your lists on
> every device, or to invite people by e-mail. See [Account and privacy](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/account-and-privacy.md).

> [accordion] How does Analyse set decide the order?
>
> By rules, not by guesswork: **Analyse set** orders the set by tempo, key and energy along the build-up you choose,
> and shows you the order before anything changes. The BPM, key and energy it goes by are estimates, so check the
> order with your ears. See [Order the set](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/order-the-set.md#analyse-the-set).

> [accordion] Which DJ software works with it?
>
> * **In**: a rekordbox collection export (XML), or a playlist exported as .txt, .m3u8 or .csv. Serato, Engine DJ,
> Mixxx and VirtualDJ export playlists in these formats too. You can also drag tracks straight out of rekordbox.
> * **Out**: the list's menu has **Download CSV** and **Copy as text** for everyone, and **Download .m3u8** and
> **Download rekordbox XML** for those who can edit. See [Take it to the booth](https://docs.setlist.dj/guide/take-it-to-the-booth.md).

> [accordion] Can I use it on a phone?
>
> Yes. A phone shows the same list, and you can add, rate, comment, play and move tracks. You cannot drag tracks in
> from another app, so share a track's link, or a whole Spotify playlist's, and paste it in **Paste links**.
